Miniature pyro effects shot of a model jetty for a giant monster film.
All we knew was that the model and location had to match and the model blows up. We spend days on location photographing and documenting the real jetty.
This was a very enjoyable build making what was a pretty exacting scale model. We also had to make all the surface structures breakable and crushable so the monster could do a lot of damage.
A lot of standard model making was done in styrene, wood and cast resins. We also had to make a lot of the surface structures breakable and crushable so the monster could do a lot of damage.
A great deal of the build was in thin foil so it could all crush. In the end, none of that was used and the jetty was just blown up.
Just to be complete, we detailed all the underside and matched the mould and slime growing on the pylons.
The pylons started as a plastic and putty pattern, it was moulded then cast in plaster so we could break individual pylons to match the originals and broken plaster looks exactly like broken concrete.
This was one of the largest balsa order I have done and luckily suppliers had enough in stock. To save us a lot of time, I ordered all the balsa cut to the sizes we needed.
All the signage was also matched by photographing the real signs and printing them out via Photoshop and gluing them to the model sign post.
We spent several days in the studio filming all the hero shots with the monster before relocating to the back lot for the final scenes. It was shot on an orange screen because the monster had green and blue colours.
It was a full day setting up the model and the effects people setting charges. Only a moment to dismantle the model. A lot of people turned out to watch this... from a safe distance.
